Should I Drip Membership Content to Improve Retention?

Ask Mike: Should I Drip Content to Improve Retention?

I'm faced with this more often than you'd think. A membership owner has a handful of courses sitting in their content library. Retention isn't where they want it to be. And someone suggests: what if you drip-fed the content? Release it slowly, week by week, so people have to stay subscribed to get it all.

It sounds logical on paper. It's how Netflix keeps you hooked on a new series, right?

Except memberships aren't Netflix, and locking your content behind a schedule to force people to stay is treating the symptom, not the disease. If retention is a problem, drip-feeding almost never fixes it. It just delays the moment someone realizes they were never going to stick around anyway.

Wait, what?!

Why Drip Feeding Isn't a Retention Strategy

I get asked this a lot inside Membership Academy, most recently from a member running a diet and lifestyle membership with six courses and no drip-feeding in place. They wanted to know if releasing content gradually would help members stay engaged and avoid falling off the wagon.

I'm not a fan of anything that artificially forces people to stay members longer.

Members should stay subscribed because they're actually getting something from your membership, not because you've gated the next module behind a countdown timer.

If people are genuinely getting overwhelmed by too much content at once, that's worth addressing. But addressing overwhelm and manufacturing a reason to keep paying are two very different problems, and drip-feeding solves neither of them properly.

Check Your Onboarding and Offboarding First

Before you even think about a drip-feed strategy, go back to basics. Nine times out of ten, people drop off because they never really got started the right way in the first place.

That means:

  • A solid onboarding process at the front end of the member journey
  • A thoughtful offboarding process at the back end, for when people do decide to leave

If either of those is missing or weak, no amount of clever content sequencing is going to move the needle on your churn rate. Get the foundations right first (see also: Is Your Member Onboarding Missing These 3 Vital Things?).

Build the Pathway Instead of the Gate

This is the part that actually moves retention. Instead of asking “how do we drip-feed this to slow people down,” ask a completely different question: “is there a logical pathway through this content?“

Most memberships hand new members a library and say “here's everything, good luck.” That's not a strategy, that's an invitation to get overwhelmed and disappear.

What you want instead is a clear, laid-out track:

  1. Start here
  2. Then do this course
  3. Then this exercise
  4. Then this next step

“If you give them that path, you don't need to drip feed, because you're telling them exactly what to do and when. You're laying out the journey for them.”

Along that path, mark milestones so members can see they're making genuine progress. Celebrate those wins. Build rituals around them too: a weekly check-in, a themed hashtag, a Monday post where people share progress. Those small, repeated touchpoints are what turn a one-time course completion into a long-term habit (related read: How to Identify Your Membership Drop-Off Points).

Don't Let Your Call Schedule Work Against You

One thing that came up in this specific case worth flagging for anyone running a lot of live touchpoints: too many calls can backfire.

The membership in question had three weekly Q&As, two two-hour Zoom hangouts, and five accountability calls. That's a serious time commitment, and here's the trap. When members miss several of those calls in a given week, they don't think “no big deal, that's optional.” They think they're failing. They feel like they're falling behind, even when they're not.

If you're running a lot of live sessions, it's worth asking your members directly:

  • Are they finding all of these genuinely useful?
  • Do they understand how to get the most from the membership without attending everything?
  • Could the schedule be scaled back without losing real value?

Overwhelm kills retention just as effectively as under-delivery does. Sometimes the fix is trimming down to what actually matters.

What To Do Instead of Drip Feeding

If you take one thing away from this, let it be this: drip feeding is a workaround for not having a pathway. Build the pathway and the drip feed becomes unnecessary.

That means:

  1. Get onboarding and offboarding solid at both ends of the journey
  2. Sequence your existing content into a clear, logical path
  3. Mark milestones members can see and celebrate
  4. Build small, repeatable rituals into your community
  5. Audit your live call schedule so it supports the pathway instead of overwhelming it

Do that, and you won't need to lock anything away to keep people around. They'll stay because they know exactly where they're headed next, and they're actually getting there.
